NEWS 01

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) released a report on Thursday stating that wholesale electricity prices soared in the first three months of this year due to power outages caused by Australia's summer heat and severe storms. The summer of 2023-24 became Australia's third hottest on record, driving increased cooling demand, particularly in Queensland, where daily demand from January to March was more than three times the historical record. And a severe storm in Victoria caused transmission towers to collapse, causing blackouts and grid congestion. However, AER board member Jarrod Ball said government price restrictions on coal and natural gas had relatively stabilized electricity prices in recent quarters. Rooftop solar generation has reached new highs, reducing demand on the grid in Victoria and South Australia, despite relatively little new generation.

NEWS 02

Rio Tinto has highlighted the importance of timely environmental and indigenous heritage approvals to maintain annual export guidance for Western Australia iron ore following a decline in first-quarter output from Rio Tinto's Western Australian iron ore. A combination of lower production and hurricane disruption to Pilbara export ports has impacted iron ore exports. Rio Tinto maintained its annual guidance despite a 5% drop in export volumes from last year. Meanwhile, Rio Tinto is advancing its Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, which it plans to put into production next year. Construction of the Western Range project is also more than 50% complete and is expected to start production next year. In addition, Rio Tinto expects China's steel exports to remain high, supporting demand for iron ore.

NEWS 03

The Victorian Energy Upgrade (VEU) scheme is a key component of the state's green energy plan but faces challenges due to a glut of low-quality appliances and predatory sales tactics. To address these issues, the government is considering implementing a minimum payment standard of A$200 for certain appliance upgrades to ensure appliance quality and consumer rights, and is proposing to ban predatory sales practices such as telemarketing and door-to-door sales. However, the move has raised concerns among consumers about potential cost increases. Additionally, the proposed ban on phone and door-to-door marketing could also reduce the number of carbon credits, driving up their price. Some critics believe the move could unfairly burden low-income families. Opposition parties have also criticized the state government's approach, saying it could hinder energy upgrades and lead to higher costs for households and businesses.
